Our Environment

We recognise and value the diverse environment in which we operate and acknowledge the importance of the surrounding ecosystems to our Traditional Owners and the pastoral activities of the Gifford Creek Station. We seek to minimise our impact through responsible environmental management.
We recognise and value the diverse environment in which we operate and acknowledge the importance of the surrounding ecosystems to our Traditional Owners and the pastoral activities of the Gifford Creek Station. We seek to minimise our impact through responsible environmental management.

While the rare earth elements we produce are critical to decarbonisation and the development of more sustainable cities and communities, we also acknowledge responsible environmental management is key to ensuring the protection of the natural resources that we depend on and share with our wide society.
Climate Change and Emissions Reduction
Climate change is a global challenge. Hastings understands it plays an important role to support global efforts to managing climate change and is taking a proactive approach to emissions reduction.

We support the goals of the Paris Agreement and IPCC assessment of climate change science and are committed to incorporating the most recent climate science into our decision-making processes.

While we seek to produce the critical inputs that are key to support global decarbonisation efforts through electrification and renewable energy technologies, we understand our responsibility to do so in a manner that reflects a commitment to decarbonise our own operations.

We maintain close ties with business partners to ensure that our products will be prioritised for use in sustainable technologies, such as wind energy and electric vehicles.

As Hastings evolves over the coming years from explorer to developer and into an operator, we aim to integrate emissions reduction into our business decisions to support our long-term vision of achieving net zero Scope 1 and 2 emissions by 2050.

Water Stewardship
Water is a critical resource that and as a shared and scarce resource in a semi-arid region that is vital ecologically and for cultural heritage, its usage must be managed efficiently.

We are committed to creating a more sustainable operation by minimising our water consumption during project development, operations and rehabilitation.

When in operation, up to 82% of water demand at the Yangibana Project’s mine and beneficiation plant will be met by recovered process water – saving a total of 2.88GL per annum or the equivalent of around 1,200 Olympic-sized swimming pools.
Waste and Tailings Management
We are committed to the responsible management of the waste generated by our operations. Our waste management approach oversees the adequate handling, storing, and disposing of materials is conducted according to their properties, environmental aspects and regulatory requirements.

We apply a waste hierarchy across the full domain of our activities so as to maximise resource recoverability and minimise landfilling.

For non-toxic organic waste, Hastings is evaluating opportunities for recycling, recovery, treatment and re-use of waste. This includes exploring large scale composting for camp food and organic waste and site-based application of the end-product. When successfully implemented, this would significantly reduce landfill volumes and life-cycle methane emissions while supplementing rehabilitation works.

Hastings supports the WA Government’s Containers for Change program at its village facilities, with drink containers collected and taken to the collection facility in Carnarvon run by ABC Foundation – an Aboriginal owned corporation.
In June 2023, Hastings began implementing plans to reduce plastic waste at our Yangibana mine site, supporting the WA Government’s efforts to eliminate the use of single-use plastics.

This involves the issue of good-quality reusable containers to permanent staff and long-term contractors, and the scheduled installation of washing basins to facilitate their reuse. Compostable packaging will also be provided for crib lunches and in the interim before the completion of these facilities.
Biodiversity
Over the past six years, Hastings has conducted numerous biodiversity surveys at the Yangibana Project’s mine and Onslow plant sites. These studies have helped us to understand the environmental value of the flora and vegetation, and terrestrial fauna and subterranean fauna in the region in which we operate.

Under the WA Environmental Protection Authority approval process, environmental impact assessments (EIA) for the Yangibana Project included a detailed and rigorous consideration of flora and fauna, water, air quality and emissions.
Mine Closure and Land Rehabilitation
Key to our mine development strategy is the Mine Closure Plan, which covers the entire mine life up until the closure phase. Closure plans for the Yangibana Project have been approved by the government and during FY23, we reviewed and updated it according to the regulation.

The closure plan for Onslow project was developed in FY23 and will be submitted for approval next financial year.
